Equality vs. Equity

Equality and equity tend to be used interchangeably, but they are very different things. Equality says that everybody gets the same thing. Equity says that everybody gets what they need to succeed. This has major implications, especially in education.

Picture a classroom of 22 students. Let's say 4 of those students have IEPs, 2 are ELLs, 3 have emotional concerns, etc. You get the idea; everybody has different learning needs. Equality gives each learner the same learning environment and materials. They're getting the same experience, but they're not getting the same thing out of that experience. Equity, on the other hand, accommodates the needs of all learners to create a fair learning environment.

These images truly speak for themselves. Equality is not enough. We need equity. EVERYONE deserves the chance to succeed. Is your classroom based on equality or equity? Take time to reflect.
